Albert “Leeter” Collier on Canvas
It has been said by many Collingwood diehards that the Heart of Collingwood tradition emanated from the Collier Brothers, Albert and Harry. Both boys grew up in Collingwood during the dark days of the Great Depression and to survive in that harsh working class environment, you had to be tough and certainly street smart.
Extraordinary “Leeter” Collier was only 15 on debut for Collingwood at Full Forward, and later developed into a Champion Centre Half Back. “Leeter” was very strong physically and opposite teams knew only too well not to intimidate the smaller Collingwood players.
Jack Dyer once said to his Richmond players, “Boys, don’t upset Leeter Collier”.
“Leeter” Collier played over 200 games for Collingwood; played in four winning Collingwood Premierships, won a Brownlow Medal and three times Copeland Trophy winner.
Legendary Norm Smith described “Leeter” Collier as “the best footballer he had ever seen” and the father of the Collingwood Football Club’s on field playing tradition.
